This is one of the few drawings by Bazille that has been squared. It shows that he had his subject from the start. For Daulte, "the preparatory drawings for the View of the Village show us admirably how Bazille gradually simplifies the branches of the pine tree...to better express the structure with a precise, incisive line..." [Daute, 1992, p. 116].
