This Study for The Family Gathering is the most summary and therefore likely the first, preceding the overall Study for The Family Gathering.

Nine people are depicted here, three men and six women. Gaston Bazille, the artist's father, is barely sketched at far left, in the position he would later have. His wife is not at his side and seems absent from the drawing, may be in the foreground. Indeed, on the preparatory drawing Study for The Family Gathering, as well as on the painting, she appears to the right of her husband. The woman to the left of Gaston Bazille is the same as in the other drawing. It is probably Adrienne des Hours, sister of Mrs Gaston Bazille, and wife of Mr des Hours. The latter appears next to Frédéric Bazille in the painting. The position of her face, the hairstyle or hat and the position of her right arm are the same as in the two drawings, which is itself identical to the painting. If we accept the hypothesis that the woman, to the right of Mrs des Hours, is Camille des Hours, then Mrs Gaston Bazille would be one of the two women in the background.

To the right, on the barely sketched wall that is clearly recognizable in the painting, stands a couple, who reappear in the other drawing. We can already make out Marc Bazille, the artist's brother, with his future wife, Suzanne Tissié. Bazille, for his part, is still absent.

Despite the lack of details about the location and the characters, we can saiy that this is indeed the first preparatory drawing for The Family Gathering.

This study can be compared to several Manet's drawings.
