In a letter of early March 1864 [Letter sold at Paris-Drouot December 7-8, 1982, lot 2. Reproduced as n° 28 in the exhibition catalogue Frédéric Bazille and Early Impressionism, The Art Institute of Chicago, 1978, p. 197; Schulman, Frédéric Bazille: Catalogue raisonné, 1995, n° 66, p. 334], Bazille wrote to his father: "As soon as I have passed my examination, I will make two small views of Paris, taken under the quays, I will attach to them one or two studio people and I will send you the whole to make you judge my progress in painting".

With the Man Smoking Pipe, this watercolor shows all of Bazille's interest in a variety of painting techniques. It is still found in pastel and etching.
